The assault will only trigger if you are carrying all the items you need to solve it, so you are probably missing something from earlier. My guess is the coin from your office chair since everyone misses that puzzle. In the latest version, the walkthrough mentions which items you need. This probably needs better in-game hinting as well, though.

Although it sounds like you're on the right track, I did read the walkthrough, realized I should try to go back to the mansion, and that did not trigger the assault. In fact, I went to every location multiple times, and never got the assault triggered.

After some experimentation, I think I figured out what is going on here. According to the walkthrough, you need to re-enter Camino's office, give him the record, and talk to him again. This is because talking to him without giving him the record leads to him convincing you to leave, using his smooth voice.

However, if you give him the record right away, he never convinces you to leave, and you don't need to re-enter the office. Once Alfono kicks you out, the scene is over, and you can proceed to the next part of the game. I included the failed talking attempt in the walkthrough because I wanted the player to get the full story and realize what the record is doing.

The situation is probably exacerbated by the fact that there is no hint as to what you need to do after talking to Camino. At that point, you just need to return to the Baron's mansion to trigger the assault scene, but there is no hinting for this due to the location specific nature of the hints. I will definitely do something about this in the post-comp release.

This marks the third seperate occasion where someone has assumed the game was broken due to a misleading walkthrough. Clearly, I need to work on my walkthrough writing skills.

I can certainly try. I should have been taking transcripts the whole time, but that's one of the other things that fell by the wayside.

I'll give it another shot and let you know.

Hi Matt

Thank you for you review of PataNoir. I am glad not everyone thinks my puzzles are completely impossible. However, I am baffled as to how you managed to get the game in an incompletable state by giving the record to Camino early. It really shouldn't matter when you give it to him, and I have been unable to reproduce the problem. Do you think you could try to reproduce it, and send me a bug report?

Thanks, David! I'm just sorry I don't have enough time to write longer reviews after getting this far behind. If you want help beta testing Scarlet, let me know.

Thanks for the nice review. If you're curious about how to get the other points, type WALKTHROUGH.
